Traditional background removal required either manual selection in Photoshop, green screens in studios, or uploading images to cloud APIs. All of these approaches have downsides: manual work is slow, green screens need equipment, and cloud APIs mean your private photos travel to someone else's server. This tool takes a completely different approach — it runs a full AI model directly inside your web browser using WebAssembly and WebGL, with zero data ever leaving your device.
The underlying library, @imgly/background-removal, implements a neural network trained specifically for image matting — the task of predicting for every pixel whether it belongs to the foreground subject or background. The model downloads once (about 5–15 MB depending on your browser's cache) and then runs entirely locally. It works particularly well on portraits, product photos, pets, and other clear foreground subjects. The output is a standard PNG file with an alpha channel (transparency), compatible with every design tool from Figma to PowerPoint.

Is my image uploaded to a server?
Never. The entire AI processing happens inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your image pixels are processed locally on your CPU/GPU and never transmitted over the network. The only network request is the one-time download of the AI model weights from a public CDN. After that, you could disconnect your internet and the tool would still work.
Why does it take 30 seconds the first time?
The first time you click "Remove Background," the browser downloads the AI model files (roughly 5–15 MB). This is a one-time cost — your browser caches the model, so subsequent uses on the same device are near-instant. On a fast connection this takes 5–10 seconds; on a slower connection up to 30 seconds. You'll see a live progress indicator while the model loads.
What image formats and sizes are supported?
The tool accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 10 MB. For best results, use images where the subject is clearly distinguishable from the background — portraits, product shots, and animals work especially well. Very busy backgrounds or fine hair details may produce less precise results. The output is always a transparent PNG regardless of the input format.
